Sustainable Copa de Rey final to offset emissions with seabed projects

  • The carbon footprint will be measured for the third consecutive year, with the collaboration of the COE.
  • The RFEF and the clubs will work together to determine carbon offsetting initiatives.
  • Campaigns will be carried out to promote public transport, commemorative bags will be distributed for recycling and there will be volunteers to encourage sustainability.

This year’s final of the Copa del Rey, which will take place next Saturday in Seville, will be sustainable as it will offset its emissions with projects improving the environment on the seabed. To this end, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the finalist clubs, Athletic Club and RCD Mallorca, will work together to determine which initiatives to carry out.

The carbon footprint will be measured for the third consecutive year running, on this occasion, with the collaboration of the COE through its calculator that has been made available to the Federation for this match. Once the results have been obtained, the aim will be to offset this impact at sea. This continues on from the moves started in previous years, which promoted the planting of trees in the Doñana National Park as part of the "Andalusian reforestation" campaign.

To reduce the environmental impact, there will be campaigns to promote the use of public transport, both trains and buses, there will be sustainability volunteers who will promote these habits and will hand out recyclable bags to deposit the different types of waste generated during the match.

Precisely today, as part of this push, the Copa del Rey trophy travelled by high speed train (AVE) to Seville, as a way of promoting this sustainable means of transport, in a move organised with RENFE.

The objective of the RFEF, through its Department of Equality, Social Responsibility and Sustainability, is to achieve the minimum possible impact within a major event of this stature and to implement sustainable policies that serve to advance this vital cause.
