The Spanish Women's National Team is looking to secure their third straight victory in the group stage of the qualification phase for the Euro 2025 in Switzerland, and to achieve this they will have to beat Denmark on Scandinavian soil. On the eve of the vital match, coach Montse Tomé, accompanied by player Laia Codina, took questions from the media at the Vejle Stadion before the official training session.
Firstly, Laia Codina spoke, explaining how Denmark have changed since the last match, as well as how the Spain squad are managing the workload in the final stretch of the season: ‘We have changed because now we are World and Nations League champions but we also know that we can achieve more great things and we want to qualify for the European Championships. We are a team that never stops aiming for more. At the end of the day, the players are the same and so is our ambition. It's not the best time of the year because some players have got a lot of games in their legs after a long season, but that's what we have to do. The coach has been adjusting the training loads and we have been adapting too. It would be a mistake to fear for our health, because when you are afraid is when more injuries occur. Tomorrow, we'll be at 100 percent and it's not only us who are going to feel the load of so many games’.

She is clear that the key to victory lies in knowing how to handle the finer details that arise in each match and knows that Denmark have extremely dangerous players who will have to be watched closely: ‘Since they changed coach they are more ambitious on the ball, they want to play out from the back and employ the high press. I've played with one of them at Arsenal. I don't think the plan will be very different from what we've seen before. Our idea is to push them back, but we'll see... It's also about dominating the individual duels that happen during the match itself.

Montse Tomé acknowledged that although the squad has picked up some injuries in defensive areas in the past few days, she hoped that ‘everything goes well and that they all make it to the end of the season. Injuries are something that happens in sport, so I hope that our players are fit and get to the end of the season in good condition. That's the way it is at the moment. When they come, what we try to do is to help them recover well to compete, to adjust their workloads, to assess them individually. I know that tomorrow we will have 24 players and that all of them will be at 100%. It's true that all three (of the knocks) are in the defensive line but we prioritise the team. When situations arise that we can’t control, we see what responses and what solutions we can provide to keep on performing. The players are playing well for their clubs and my mind is focused on how we can get the best out of the players we have and think about how to make Spain a more competitive team. We are now focusing on Denmark.

Finally, the coach explained that they have studied their opponents thoroughly so that they have the best chances possible to take the three points from the first of these two matches against the Danes: ‘They are an intense team who vary their structure in attack and defence. We've analysed the matches they've played well in. They have won the last two and performed well against top level opposition, for example against Germany. We know their team well, we know that Harder is a standout player and that their squad competes in the most important leagues. They are a complete team, we have analysed them and we have a plan to get the best out of our players to compete for the victory in the match.
