Pau Cubarsí's Olympic dream

The young centre-back is looking forward to "one of the biggest challenges a footballer can have".

Pau Cubarsí is one of the sensations of Spanish football this season. The Catalan centre-back has fulfilled the dream of every child at just 17 years of age. First Division, Champions League, Spanish National Team... and now, the Olympic Games are on the horizon.

With an indelible smile on his face, Cubarsí analyses everything that has happened to him and, above all, what is to come: "It has been a very good season. Now we are looking forward to the Olympic Games, one of the biggest challenges a footballer can have, and we are approaching it with a lot of enthusiasm and hard work". Moreover, the young defender is clear that, despite everything, he is not going to change his way of being: "I feel calm, I try to be myself and not deviate from who I really am, my family helps me a lot in that. I’m looking at it as I always do, as if I were just another youth player who works everyday to improve and try to achieve a challenge like winning the Olympic Games, which would be impressive".

The Spain Olympic National Team’s first training session

On how he found out Santi Denia had called him up for the Olympic team, Pau tells it in a way that is as sincere as it is ambitious: "I was training in the gym because I wanted to be in the squad and I was preparing myself. I went on Instagram, saw the news and the truth is that I was very happy".

Being the youngest player in the team, anyone would think that it would be difficult for Pau Cubarsí to adapt, however, the national team is a real family from day one of the training camp: "There are some younger and some older players, we are a good group, a good family and everyone is helping me a lot".

The dream of the Olympic Games begins on Wednesday 24 July against Uzbekistan and both Spain and Pau Cubarsí dream every night of getting the ball rolling at the Parc des Princes in Paris: "We're really looking forward to it, I'm the most excited. We are really looking forward to the first match".
