STANDINGS | One point away from sealing the deal

Next Thursday Spain will face off against Japan to finish first in group E in this World Cup

This Sunday's draw between Spain and Germany, together with Costa Rica's victory against Japan, has tightened Group E, leaving it open for the third and final day next Thursday.

Within group E, Spain will finish first as long as they win or draw against Japan and Costa Rica does not defeat Germany.

If Luis Enrique's players tie with the Japanese, they will qualify. In any case and even with a defeat, as long as the Ticos do not win or Germany does so without recovering the great goal difference that separates them from the National Team, it will be Spain that wins. The quarter finals will be played against Croatia, Belgium or Morocco.

The current classification of the group is as follows:

GROUP E. WORLD CUP OF QATAR 2022

Ranking National Team Played Won Draws Lost For Against Goal Difference Points
SPAIN 2 1 1 0 8 1 7 4
Japan 2 1 0 1 2 2 0 3
Costa Rica 2 1 0 1 1 7 -6 3
Germany 2 0 1 1 2 3 -1 1

The first two ranked teams will advance to the round of 16 of the World Cup which will be played between Monday the 5th of December and Tuesday the 6th of December.
