Unai Simón: "The past should serve as a learning experience, it won't weigh us down"

The goalkeeper has shown all his confidence in the manager: "He is very motivating, a very good manager", he explained

Unai Simón appeared this Monday at a press conference at the Ciudad del Fútbol de Las Rozas convinced that the experience, two years ago, in another Final Four of the Nations League, will be positive for the team. "The past should serve as a learning experience, to correct what we did not do well, but it will not weigh us down," said the goalkeeper from Alava.

Unai Simón did not want to give much importance to the question of whether or not he will be a starter, after an injury in the previous call-up left him out of the list. Unai pointed out that, "out of respect for all goalkeepers", he would accept a hypothetical substitution that, in any case, would be "the manager's decision". "I am nobody to say whether or not I deserve to be a starter, the only thing I try to do is train and improve to be a better goalkeeper than I am now," he explained, to questions from journalists.

"We are always going to have doubts, when the manager changes, about who he is going to put in; I don't know who will play the next match, but it doesn't worry me, football works like that," the goalkeeper pointed out, before explaining that his goal, day by day, is only to perform at the highest level for the good of the team.

The goalkeeper, who turned 26 this Sunday, referred to his relationship with manager Luis de la Fuente. "Only 11 can participate, and in our case, a goalkeeper," he said, before defining that he feels "all the confidence" of the Riojan. "The truth is that it is nice to see that we have coincided since the U-18 and now we coincide at the highest level with the national team," he said.

A manager, Luis de la Fuente, about whom he has had words of praise and gratitude. "We have the keys to what he asks of us and with them we will go to death in the match against Italy," he stressed. "We need short and concise messages and I think Luis is very good in that sense, very motivating; he is a calm guy who knows what he has to do at all times, he is a very good manager", summarized Unai Simón.
