Iceland, Here We Come!
Almost five hours after departing from Palma Airport, Spain touched down in the Icelandic capital. The national team was welcomed at Reykjavík International Airport by clear skies, a timid sun and typically blustery conditions.
Matchday six and the final round of the qualification phase for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 has brought Sonia Bermúdez’s side to the northernmost capital city in Europe. So close to the Arctic Circle is Reykjavík that, at this time of year, it enjoys almost 21 hours of daylight. The city, whose name means “Smoky Bay” due to the steam rising from the region’s geothermal springs, greeted the Spanish squad with considerably cooler temperatures than those experienced over the past week in Palma de Mallorca.
Following their arrival, the players travelled by coach to the team hotel, where they will remain until Monday’s official training session at Laugardalsvöllur Stadium. In less than 48 hours, the venue will host Iceland v Spain, the final and decisive fixture in Group A3.
The objective is clear: secure victory, finish top of the group and book a direct place at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, where Spain will look to defend the world title won in 2023 in Australia and New Zealand.
