Japan, Costa Rica and Zambia will be Spain's opponents at the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand

The Spanish national team, which starts as top seed, will make its debut on 21 July in Wellington against the Central American national team.

The Spanish women's national football team knows now its route to the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. After the draw at the Aotea Centre in Auckland, Spain is in Group C and their opponents will be Japan, Costa Rica and Zambia. All their matches will be played in New Zealand.

 

The national team was seeded from Pot 1 for the first time, making the best possible start to their sixth place in the FIFA rankings after their recent draw against Sweden and a remarkable win over the USA. They were drawn in Pot C as well as Japan, Costa Rica and Zambia.

Spain will make their debut on 21 July at the Wellington Regional Stadium (39,000-capacity) against Costa Rica 37th-ranked. The Spanish team will play against Zambia, which are World Cup Debutants and ranked 81st in the world on 26 July at Eden Park in Auckland (capacity 48,276). They will close the group stage at the Wellington Regional Stadium on 31 July against Japan, the world's eleventh-ranked team and always a dangerous opponent with many strengths.

From 20 July to 20 August, the national team will be among the contenders for a very open World Cup. This will be the first World Cup to feature 32 contenders for the title. Spain will play two friendly matches in November to get ready for the event. The first one will be against Argentina in Melilla (Friday 11) and the other one against Japan at La Cartuja in Seville (Tuesday 15). In February, they will also have demanding international commitments and in April, they will play other two matches in Ibiza against two opponents to be confirmed.
