MATCH REPORT | Spain thrash Switzerland to record fourth consecutive win (1-7)

Montse Tomé's team controlled the game from start to finish and won thanks to goals from Oihane, Alexia (x2), María Méndez, Athenea del Castillo (x2) and Maite Oroz.

The Spanish national team came out to the Letzigrund Arena with the intention of emulating the first leg against Switzerland in which they thrashed their opponents 5-0, and the start could not have been better. Spain dominated the ball in their opponents' half and in the first real attack they struck the first blow with a set piece routine that Montse Tomé had clearly been practicing with her players over the previous few days on the training pitch.

Tere Abelleira crossed to the far post where with was only half cleared before Oihane headed the ball into the net. It was a special day for the Basque player as it was her first for the Spanish national team.

But as the coach said in the pre-match press conference, this team is "ambitious" and was not satisfied with just one goal, and as such, a second did not take long to materialise. Salma was on the edge of the area and saw Lucía García in space on the left and played the ball to her. The Manchester United player quickly played the ball back to her team-mate Salma, who broke through two defenders and raced to the by-line and pulled back a low cross that only needed Alexia Putellas to finish comfortably, which she did.

Spain did not take their foot off the accelerator during the second half, and scored again from a corner. This time, Tere Abelleira's pinpoint cross floated to the near post where María Méndez made herself strongest and tallest to muscle her defenders off and rise to flick the ball into the back of the net and to also score her first goal for the national team. A few minutes later, Alexia converted a penalty to increase the lead.

Switzerland then scored, in what appeared to be almost by accident, when newcomer Pilgrim controlled a long ball and saved from Misa, but Spain hit back instantly with a header from Athenea del Castillo after a great pass from Alexia. There was still time for a brace and for Maite Oroz to score another goal. The game was all but over and Montse Tomé's side claimed their fourth consecutive precious win in this UEFA Women's Nations League.
