The Spanish National Team exits the Women's Euro Championship after losing in extra time (2-1) against England
The National Team was hoping to make history as they faced off against England, the tournament's unbeaten host nation, in the Brighton & Hove Community Stadium.
Despite the locals' strong push, it was evident that the national team would dominate the first half. Jorge Vilda's team started to gain control of the game after the opening thirty minutes, using possession of the ball as their main weapon and making their first unsuccessful efforts at the host goal. Sandra Paos' goal in the first half was disrupted only by an offside goal against Ellen White that was disallowed in the 37th minute.
After the halftime, the beginning of the second half would be a faithful mirror of what had taken in the first. The National Team went for it and soon found it. After coming back into the game after the break, Athenea got the ball on the right side and, after surpassing her defender, found Esther in the middle of the area. Esther easily beat the local goalkeeper to put the game in score at 0-1 with a goal.
As the game approached its conclusion, the English team gained control of possession, motivated by the desire to tie the score. And, despite the national team's defensive effort, they tie the match in minute 83. Ella Toone scooped up a loose ball after a sloppy play inside the area to tie the score and force overtime.
The first part of the extra time did not go as planned. Georgia Stanway defeated Sandra Paos with a long shot in an isolated move, and she couldn't stop the ball. Despite conceding a goal, the National Team went on the offensive in pursuit of a tie. Amaiur Sarriegi missed the goal by a few millimeters from the edge of the area.
Aitana made another attempt with a cross shot that missed early in the second overtime period. The National Team persisted in their efforts, and a few seconds later Olga Carmona and Amaiur both attempted to draw unsuccessfully. And in the last seconds of the game, local defensive prowess prevailed despite Jorge Vilda's team's efforts.
The scoreline did not change when the extra period was through, and the Spanish National Team's hopes of reaching the quarterfinals of the 2022 European Championship in England were dashed.
