Twenty-one players have been chosen for a remarkable challenge: to represent Spain with pride and honor at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, which will take place from 27 September to 19 October. On Wednesday, head coach Paco Gallardo announced the official squad list. The team will travel to the South American nation on Monday 22 September, aiming to arrive in peak condition for the start of the competition, the most prestigious tournament worldwide for this age category.
The national team approaches the championship with great enthusiasm and the ambitious dream of claiming a second star. Spain memorably lifted the U-20 World Cup in 1999, and now seeks once again to inscribe its name in a distinguished roll of honor. This edition is especially significant, as it marks Spain’s return to the tournament after a 12-year absence—clear proof of the difficulty of earning a place among the world’s elite.
Spain will make its debut in Chile on 28 September (22:00 CET) against Morocco at Santiago’s National Stadium. In the same venue, the squad will face Mexico on 1 October and Brazil on Friday, 4 October, to conclude the group stage—an exacting challenge from day one, as all three opponents bring considerable strength and pedigree.
Securing qualification for Chile was far from easy, the result of countless hours of preparation and hard work. Now, as coach Paco Gallardo emphasizes, the time has come to enjoy and to compete in a unique and unrepeatable tournament—an opportunity for this generation of top-level players to emulate the celebrated team that reached glory in Nigeria in 1999.
