Clone of MATCH REPORT | Spain are Nations League Champions (2-0)

Goals from Aitana and Mariona gave Spain their second international title in just six months as La Cartuja set a new spectator attendance record.

This 28 February 2024 will always remain in the hearts of all fans of the Spanish national football team and in the minds of all those present at the Estadio de La Cartuja, which smashed its own attendance record.

It was clear from the start that Spain and France had studied each other well in preparation for the match, and as such, the game went as expected; a lot of possession for the Spanish team and robberies leading to dangerous breaks in quick transition for the French.

In the eighth minute, a ball from Aitana Bonmatí and Mariona linked up to play a ball for Salma Paralluelo to run onto and hit a left-footed shot from inside the edge of the area, but her shot deflected off an opponent and out for a corner..

In the 26th minute, Spain's first big chance came when Salma's cross from the left was excellently headed at the near post by captain Irene Paredes against the post of Peyraud-Magnin's French goal. So powerful was the header that the "thud" off the post echoed around La Cartuja.

Just six minutes later, in the 32nd minute, a combination on the left between Jenni Hermoso and Olga Carmona ended with a low cross into the heart of the box that Aitana took advantage of to score the first goal of the match and send La Cartuja into jubilation. Before the break there was still time for another chance for a confident Spain team that worked the ball from the corner to Laia Aleixandri, whose shot went narrowly wide. With Spain holding a slender lead, the game reached half-time.

In the second half, Spain continued to control the ball and, as a result of a combination between Laia Aleixandri and Aitana, the ball found its way to Athenea, who put the ball in for Mariona to score the second in the 53rd minute.

Despite their lead, Spain would not stop giving it their all in front of a packed La Cartuja that once again smashed the attendance record at a women's Spain match. The 32,657 spectators in the stands nearly got to see another goal for Spain, but it was not to be as Irene Paredes' header went just wide of the post.

The national team would not let their lead slip away and went on to win the UEFA Women's Nations League just six months after lifting the World Cup to the skies above Sydney. This is undoubtedly a team for the ages.
