A Record Built Against the Elite
Spain’s spectacular run of 40 consecutive matches without defeat continues to grow with every game, a record that takes on even greater significance when considering the opponents against whom it has been achieved.
Five of Spain’s last six matches have come against teams ranked among the top ten in the FIFA World Ranking. It is not simply a matter of quantity. It is also about the setting, the opposition and the level of challenge.
Looking solely at this latest stretch, Spain’s run began on 6 June at the World Cup, with a narrow victory over Portugal in the round of 16, who were then ranked seventh in the FIFA World Ranking. The 0-1 win began a sequence of matches against some of the biggest powers in international football.
Four days later, Luis de la Fuente’s side secured a 2-1 victory over Belgium, the world’s eighth-ranked team. The level of difficulty only increased. On 14 July, Spain defeated France, third in the world rankings, with a convincing 0-2 victory that underlined the team’s belief that it was capable of achieving great things.
But one of the biggest tests was still to come. On 19 July, Spain faced Argentina, the world’s second-ranked team, and once again came out on top: a 1-0 victory that secured the World Cup title. It was Spain’s second World Cup triumph and further evidence that this is a team capable of leaving a lasting mark on an era.
The run continued as the new season began. On 26 September, against England at Wembley, the national team unveiled its second star against the fourth-ranked side in the FIFA World Ranking. Spain once again rose to the occasion in a high-level encounter, securing a 2-3 victory.
The latest chapter came on 29 September against Croatia. Although they currently sit 12th in the FIFA World Ranking, Spain gave their opponents no chance, completing a commanding 4-1 victory.
Those are the latest matches, all played at the highest possible level. But looking at the overall record, Spain have now gone 40 matches without defeat, an unprecedented run.
Spain’s unbeaten streak began on 26 March 2024 against Brazil at the Santiago Bernabéu. Since then, the national team have remained unbeaten, winning 31 of the 40 matches they have played, while also lifting the 2023 UEFA Nations League, the 2024 European Championship and, ultimately, the FIFA World Cup in the United States on 19 July.
