Aitana Bonmatí, three in a row: ‘The Best’
That Aitana Bonmatí has already secured her place in the history of women’s football is no longer in doubt. Nor is her determination to continue writing her story in golden letters. On Tuesday evening, the Catalan midfielder was named FIFA Best Women’s Player 2025 for the third consecutive year.
The ‘The Best’ awards from 2023, 2024 and 2025 now shine in her trophy cabinet, alongside three Ballon d’Or titles, further underlining the extraordinary individual career of the Spain international born in Sant Pere de Ribes.
This latest accolade crowns a magnificent year in which Bonmatí reached the final of the UEFA Women’s EURO in Switzerland, finishing runner-up with the Spanish national team, and played a key role in Spain’s triumph in their second UEFA Women’s Nations League title.
At club level with FC Barcelona, the midfielder completed a clean sweep of domestic honours, lifting the Supercopa de España, the Copa de la Reina and Liga F, while also reaching the final of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
The outstanding moment currently enjoyed by Spanish women’s football was clearly reflected at the FIFA ‘The Best’ Awards Gala on two notable occasions: first, with the announcement of a FIFA World XI featuring as many as seven Spanish players; and again at the decisive moment of the ceremony, when the screens revealed Aitana Bonmatí, Alexia Putellas and Mariona Caldentey as the three finalists for the top individual honour.
