HIGHLIGHTS | Two extra-times, a penalty shootout and a stunning goal on the opening night of the Round of 16
Atlético de Madrid, Athletic Club and Real Sociedad are the first teams to book their place in the quarter-finals.
The Round of 16 got off to a thrilling start on Tuesday, delivering drama, spectacular goals, extra time and everything at stake. It was an evening defined by fine margins, with only one match settled within the 90 minutes. Extra time at the Reino de León and a penalty shootout at Anoeta put the finishing touch on a memorable night.
Atlético de Madrid travelled to Riazor to face a resilient RC Deportivo side that fought until the very end. Only a moment of magic from Antoine Griezmann was able to crush the hosts’ dreams, as a superb direct free-kick was enough to seal Atlético’s place in the quarter-finals.
The Reino de León hosted a match not for the faint-hearted. Cultural Leonesa started strongly, taking the lead through Iván Calero. Athletic Club responded and levelled the score, with both Calero and Guruzeta going on to score twice, bringing the game to 2–2. Before half-time, two penalties—one for each side—sent the match into further chaos, making it 3–3 at the break.
After six first-half goals, the second half saw fewer chances, with Athletic reduced to ten men. With the score still level after 90 minutes, the tie went to extra time. Once again, penalties proved decisive, as Unai Gómez converted from the spot to send the Basque side through to the quarter-finals.
Real Sociedad had to come from behind to progress on an unforgettable night at Anoeta. CA Osasuna took a two-goal lead in an excellent first half. A spectacular strike from Moncayola opened the scoring after just four minutes, and the second goal came via an own goal off Mikel Oyarzabal. Spurred on by the home crowd, Real Sociedad pulled one back through Turrientes in the 75th minute before Zubeldia dramatically equalised in the 93rd minute.
The hosts had a chance to win it in extra time from the penalty spot, but Aitor Fernández emerged as Osasuna’s hero by saving Oyarzabal’s effort. The tie was ultimately decided in a shootout, where Unai Marrero saved the visitors’ final penalty to complete an astonishing comeback and confirm Real Sociedad’s place in the quarter-finals.
