Hansi Flick: “We are Barcelona and we always want to win”

On the eve of the Spanish Super Cup final, the German coach assessed his team’s form after their semifinal win over Athletic Club and spoke about how facing Real Madrid in a final is both highly motivating and extremely demanding.

Team motivation:
“Playing a final and a Clásico is always motivating for everyone. We want to repeat the work we did against Athletic Club, knowing how difficult that will be.”

On the opposition:
“Real Madrid have fantastic, world-class players and the level of the team is incredibly high. But I focus on my team. We want to win a title, and to do that we have to beat Real Madrid. No further motivation is needed.”

Starting the year with a title:
“If we win, the Supercopa can give us an extra boost of confidence for the rest of the season. I have a good feeling about my team and I believe they can perform at a very high level — for themselves, for the club, and for the fans.”

On Mbappé’s presence:
“He’s the best striker in the world right now and has scored many goals. He’s a world-class player.”

On favourites:
“A final is different, and every match against Real Madrid is different too. There are no favourites. We’ll try to perform at our best to win the Supercopa.”

Squad availability:
“All players are available, except Gavi and Christensen.”

Match preparation:
“We approach the match like any other, but we know we are Barcelona and our goal is always to win. I see the team very focused, and that gives me a lot of confidence. The road to the end of the season will be long, but we have to show our best version against one of the best teams in the world.”
