Luis de la Fuente: “We want to remain No.1 in the FIFA World Ranking”
De la Fuente began on a solemn note, offering his condolences following the passing of former Espanyol president Ferran Martorell: “We have just learned of his passing and would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.”
Turning to football matters, the coach confirmed there will be changes to the line-up: “We will rotate the team—it’s a decision we had already made—but we will still field a very competitive side because we want to keep winning. The national team demands maximum performance.”
On Spain’s status as potential World Cup favourites, he remained measured: “Everyone likes to be spoken of positively, but we must perform at an almost perfect level to win. We appreciate the recognition, while understanding there are other equally strong teams.”
Regarding the goalkeeping position, he kept his cards close to his chest: “Even the goalkeeper doesn’t yet know if he will start. This is not just another friendly—we are competing to remain No.1 in the rankings. We need to perform well, and we’ll decide tomorrow.”
On the core of the squad ahead of the World Cup, he expressed confidence: “The best news is that we have a solid group and a very strong foundation. If there are no setbacks, we already have 20 to 22 players in mind for the tournament.”
Speaking about the venue, he added: “I love coming here. Four years ago the atmosphere was outstanding, and I’m looking forward to experiencing it again. We want to remain No.1 in the world rankings—it will be a very demanding match.”
He also highlighted the connection with supporters: “Every challenge excites us. I want the fans to feel that same enthusiasm. The most beautiful thing is that the national team inspires a whole country.”
Finally, on the integration of new players, De la Fuente stressed the importance of unity: “For me, the group dynamic is essential. New players must contribute both on and off the pitch. The national team is different—any mistake can eliminate you. My impression of the newcomers has been excellent.”
