Official Statement: Finalissima
On May 16, 2025, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) met in Paraguay with CONMEBOL, FIFA, UEFA, and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) to begin the procedures that made it possible to reach an agreement to stage the Finalissima in Qatar.
On February 28, a war situation broke out that affected several countries, including Qatar. All the institutions involved understood that, unfortunately, it was impossible to play the scheduled matches there.
From the very first moment, the Federation expressed its absolute interest in ensuring that this match would still take place, considering that it brings prestige and international reputation during a key window in a World Cup year. The Federation has also worked intensively toward that goal.
Spain was willing to play, as it had always stated. It did not set any conditions.
From the beginning, the Federation worked hand in hand with UEFA to reach an agreement and offered all possible alternatives:
Hosting the match in Spain, given the country’s strong organizational capacity, which would allow it to be held successfully in a short period of time.
Holding the match at a neutral venue.
Playing the match under a different format.
Spain, together with UEFA, offered every possible option. Nevertheless, given the situation, the Finalissima has been canceled.
At the same time, and responsibly safeguarding the interests of the Spanish national team, the Federation has begun the necessary arrangements to secure the matches that Spain will play during the next international window in Spain.
The Federation regrets the cancellation of this match and, under the circumstances, would like to thank UEFA for the efforts made at all times to keep the game on the schedule
