Puebla, Where Two Continents Meet
Football once again finds a meeting point between continents in Puebla, Mexico. At the foot of the volcanoes and under the gaze of the historic Estadio Cuauhtémoc, Peru and Spain will contest a friendly with a World Cup feel, a fixture that goes beyond mere preparation and becomes an event in its own right for a city renowned for blending history, culture and sporting passion.
The match will serve as Spain’s final test before their debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while Peru will be looking to make a statement against one of the leading powers in world football.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two national teams. To date, the record favours Spain, who have won each of the previous three encounters and will be aiming to extend that run on Mexican soil.
The fixture also carries symbolic significance for the Spanish national team. It marks Spain’s seventh visit to Mexico and their second to the city of Puebla. The previous occasion remains etched in the nation’s footballing memory: the quarter-finals of the 1986 FIFA World Cup against Belgium, also at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc, a bitter night that ended with elimination on penalties. Forty years later, the national team return in search of a different chapter.
Mexican referee Hernández Gómez will take charge of the match.
From a sporting perspective, Luis de la Fuente’s side will use the fixture to fine-tune preparations ahead of the World Cup. However, they will be without several key players, including Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams and Víctor Muñoz, who have remained at the team’s base camp in Chattanooga to continue their recovery programmes.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Luis de la Fuente underlined the importance of the collective spirit within the squad:
“More than a group, we are a family. The relationship we have goes far beyond football; it is human and emotional. We are very fortunate to have these players.”
Yeremy Pino also stressed the team’s determination ahead of the encounter:
“We want to produce our best performance and win the match so that we are fully prepared for our World Cup debut.”
Peru and Spain are set to write another chapter in their shared history. One more for the record books, but also one more for the memory of Puebla, a city that once again takes its place on the international football stage.
