RFEF to Take the World Cup Trophy to Tributes Honouring Spain's World Champions
The Spain internationals who were crowned FIFA World Cup champions this summer have already received a warm welcome from supporters across the country. With the start of the new LaLiga season, tributes to the world champions are now moving into Spanish stadiums. To mark the occasion, Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Rafael Louzán has written to the presidents of all clubs whose players were part of the World Cup-winning squad, offering to make the FIFA World Cup trophy part of their celebrations.
Exactly one month after Spain's victory in the final on 19 July at the New York/New Jersey stadium, Madrid will host the first tribute this Wednesday. The Metropolitano, home of Atlético Madrid, will honour its World Cup-winning internationals, with the trophy itself taking centre stage alongside the players who secured Spain's second star.
Six Spanish top-flight clubs had players in Spain's World Cup squad: Athletic Club, Real Sociedad, Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona, RC Celta de Vigo and Atlético Madrid.
The RFEF has made the World Cup trophy available to these clubs during the opening rounds of the Spanish top-flight league season, allowing supporters to feel like "protagonists in the national team's triumph", in the words of President Louzán.
The trophy will then embark on a nationwide tour, visiting stadiums and venues across Spain in response to hundreds of requests already received by the RFEF from sporting organisations, public institutions and other bodies eager to celebrate the historic achievement.
