History, competition, celebration, a love of sport, institutional representation and solidarity initiatives all came together on Saturday in Castellón for the thrilling final of the Iberdrola Women’s Supercopa — the first major tournament of the year in Spanish women’s football.

Goals from Esmee Brugts and Alexia Putellas secured FC Barcelona’s sixth Supercopa title in a final preceded by an official institutional event, where local authorities and representatives of both finalist clubs gathered in a cordial atmosphere. RFEF president Rafael Louzán acted as host during the traditional exchange of commemorative gifts marking the occasion.

Earlier in the day, Louzán visited the Casa del Caragols in Castellón to view the exhibition showcasing the history of the competition, which has been on display in the city centre over recent days. He also spent time at the fan zone, featuring a range of activities for supporters, sharing the pre-match hours with fans ahead of the clash at Castalia.

Inside the stadium, players from both teams observed a minute’s silence in memory of the victims of the recent railway accidents. The teams also posed with a banner in support of the fight against childhood cancer, the main solidarity cause of this year’s Supercopa, promoted through the joint work of the RFEF and the Unoentrecienmil Foundation.

In support of the initiative, the RFEF president and the foundation’s Director General, Elena Huarte-Mendicoa, presented the gold ribbons worn by players during matches to raise awareness and support funding for research into childhood cancer, under the slogan “This match, we are going to win.”

Following the final whistle from referee María Eugenia Gil and in front of packed stands at the Castalia Stadium, celebrations erupted on the pitch as FC Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas received the trophy from Rafael Louzán. She then lifted it high into the Castellón sky, bringing the curtain down on an intense and emotional week that marked another significant step forward in the continued growth of women’s football.
