Rafael Louzán and Isabel Díaz Ayuso launch the countdown to the decisive Spain–Germany fixture in the UEFA Women’s Nations League final in Madrid
The Ciudad del Fútbol hosted the official presentation of the match that will decide the UEFA Women’s Nations League title, to be played on 2 December at the Metropolitano Stadium in the Spanish capital.
The official event was held at the Ciudad del Fútbol, where, in addition to the two leaders, national team head coach Sonia Bermúdez, team captain Irene Paredes, and internationals Vicky López and Fiamma Benítez shared their thoughts ahead of the final. Also present were the RFEF vice-president and president of the Madrid Football Federation, Paco Díez; vice-president Sergio Merchán; and RFEF general secretary Álvaro de Miguel Casanueva.
Speaking on behalf of Spanish football, RFEF president Rafael Louzán expressed the collective pride in hosting such a significant final in the Community of Madrid: “It is a source of pride for our country to have a national team capable of competing for yet another title. I thank the Community of Madrid for its commitment to a final of such magnitude, a match we will stage in one of Europe’s most important stadiums, the Metropolitano. Madrid continues to host major world-class sporting events. The RFEF feels very much at home working with both the Community and the City Council of Madrid. From here we strive to be a global reference point. Football lifts us to the very top.”
For her part, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, President of the Community of Madrid, highlighted the significance of adding the Spanish women’s national team to a region recognised worldwide for sport:
“This is an event of vital importance for the Community. We work to ensure that everything we project from this region to the world is ever more complete. Our sporting calendar is exceptional. We are the only capital in the world to host so many major events in a single year. Women’s sport is a true force for change. We want sport in our region to reach from the smallest towns to the biggest competitions. This is the Madrid of everyone — a city in vogue that speaks for Spain and helps promote our country abroad. Men and women alike setting examples for children and for all who look to these athletes and see the capacity to compete and win.”
Members of the Spanish women’s national team joined the presentation with the ambition of lifting yet another title for Spanish women’s football. Head coach Sonia Bermúdez expressed her delight at playing at home: “Playing at the Metropolitano is incredible for us. We will need the full support of our fans. We want to win both matches and come back from Germany with a strong result. We have a great opponent, and Madrid will see some of the best players in the world.”
Team captain Irene Paredes reflected on the remarkable progress of women’s football in Spain: “When I made my debut, what we are living today was unimaginable. Now we have the chance to defend our Nations League title. Everything has changed. Being able to play the final in Madrid makes us very happy; we are full of excitement.” She was joined by two players with roots in Madrid. Fiamma Benítez noted:
“It will be an emotional match. As an Atlético player, the chance to lift a title at the Metropolitano makes me very proud.” And the youngest player in the squad, Vallecas-born Vicky López, added:
“When I played football on the streets of my neighbourhood, I never imagined this. It’s a final with the national team. It feels special, and I hope we can lift the trophy surrounded by our people.”
Prior to the official event, the President of the Community of Madrid and the RFEF President visited the national team to wish the entire squad good luck ahead of their training session at the Ciudad del Fútbol.
Spain will face Germany in the second leg of the UEFA Women’s Nations League final at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid on 2 December, kicking off at 18:30.
