Six Spanish Players Nominated for the Ballon d’Or

Spanish football continues to set the standard in the women’s Ballon d’Or. Aitana Bonmatí, the reigning winner, claimed the award three consecutive times, in 2023, 2024 and 2025, while Alexia Putellas won it twice, in 2021 and 2022. That remarkable record could be extended this year by one of the six Spanish internationals nominated: Alexia Putellas, Claudia Pina, María León, Patri Guijarro, Cata Coll and Mariona Caldentey.

These nominations confirm the leading role played by our players in one of the world’s most prestigious individual awards. The Ballon d’Or recognises the best player of the season, taking into account individual performances, titles won and influence on the game. This year marks the award’s 70th edition.

This year, Alexia Putellas, Claudia Pina, Patri Guijarro, María León, Cata Coll and Mariona Caldentey have all been Nations League champions with Spain, while also helping the national team secure qualification for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. The first five also completed a four-trophy haul with FC Barcelona: the Champions League, Liga F, Spanish Super Cup and Copa de la Reina Iberdrola.

Spanish representation extends to the other categories too. After winning the inaugural Young Player of the Year award, Vicky López has been nominated again, this time alongside Clara Serrajordi. Meanwhile, Cata Coll is once again among the candidates for the 2026 Best Goalkeeper award.
