Sonia Bermúdez: “Maximum respect for Germany. I will not settle for a draw — I want to win.”
After announcing the list of 25 players selected for the UEFA Women’s Nations League final, the Madrid-born coach appeared in the press room of the Villalonga Hall at the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas to address journalists ahead of this decisive two-leg final against Germany.
She began by congratulating the men’s national team for their recent World Cup qualification and highlighted that both teams currently hold the FIFA No. 1 ranking. She also wished the best of luck to the Futsal National Team, which is in the Philippines to compete in the first Futsal World Cup. In addition, she expressed her gratitude to El Mago Pop for his collaboration in unveiling the squad list.
One of the main talking points was the inclusion of Edna Imade:
“We are delighted to have her and grateful to everyone who helped make it possible. She has great scoring ability, is strong, excellent in the air, attacks space very well, is fast, and is a wonderful person. We are looking forward to having her with us.”
Bermúdez added that Edna’s integration will be very smooth: “We have a fantastic group that will welcome her with open arms, and we have exceptional captains who make everything easier. We can’t wait to have her here on Monday.”

Regarding Fiamma Benítez, she noted:
“She has great potential, she is young, and she has improved enormously defensively. In that midfield role we demand a great deal of work. She is developing well, she scored yesterday, understands her role, and comes here to contribute. I am very pleased for her goal.”
When asked about the presence of nine forwards in the squad, she responded humorously:
“As a former striker myself, maybe one day I’ll call up all 25… just kidding. Laia adapts very well both as a centre-back and in her usual role. She is hardworking, never spares any effort, and will undoubtedly become world-class.”
Another name highlighted was Eva Navarro:
“She can play in several positions. She looks good, is in a strong moment, and contributes whether she starts or comes off the bench. She takes players on, delivers good crosses… We are extremely happy with this squad, and it has been very difficult to select.”
Athenea, returning to the squad, comes with a clear objective:
“In the last camp she came in due to an injury, and she showed that she brings joy, effort, and the desire to contribute even if she is not playing every minute. She radiates this energy, and we are thrilled to have her back.”
The coach also encouraged fans to attend both the final at the Metropolitano and Monday’s open training session:
“I want to encourage everyone to come to the Metropolitano, and also to our open-doors session on Monday. I know it will be cold, but your support means so much to us. It is a privilege to watch these players train and to attend the match. It would excite us greatly and give the team the warmth and energy to perform even better.”

On Germany as the opponent:
“Germany has an outstanding team. We have maximum respect. The final will not be easy. We are fully aware of the difficulty ahead. The stadium will be full, and they will have their fans behind them — and if they can fill it, so can we on December 2nd. They are powerful, strong, and never give up. They may seem out of the match, but they always fight back. First, we will focus on the away match.”

Two demanding fixtures lie ahead, but she highlighted the enthusiasm within the group:
“What has pleased us most is seeing the happiness in the group, their desire to learn, to improve, and to be better every day. We want to win, to be the best, and to stay the best, maintaining this positive atmosphere and joy.”
She reaffirmed her competitive spirit:
“I will not sign for a draw — I want to win there. Ideally, we would win by many goals, but the tie will be decided by small details.”
She added: “Mentally, Spain is capable of beating any team, and physically we will prepare with full responsibility to win the first leg and then focus on the return.”
