Sonia Bermúdez: “We Want to Test Ourselves Against the Best Teams”
Just two days after Spain secured an important victory over the four-time world champions in Washington, D.C., two of the leading powers in women’s football are set to meet again, this time in Philadelphia. Subaru Park will host the clash on Tuesday at 7 p.m. local time (1 a.m. on Wednesday in mainland Spain).
A World Cup year: “We want to test ourselves against the best teams and compete against sides with different styles. We know it will be very difficult and different from Saturday’s match in Washington. These are very important games and, although Brazil is still a long way off, we were clear that we wanted the toughest possible tests during this international window.”
World-class role models: “Spain have made great physical strides in recent years. I remember that when I was playing, it was an area where we had a disadvantage and needed to improve. Nowadays, female footballers live and breathe the game, and that is the path we must follow to ensure future generations maintain this level.”
Drawing conclusions from the matches: “I have already said that neither team sees these as friendlies. We have come here to win. We want to see different players and try different systems, but without losing sight of the competitive nature of these games. We take them very seriously and will go out to win a match that we expect to be much tougher than Saturday’s.”
Everyone available: “All the players are ready to play. Alexia will make her 150th appearance tomorrow, whether she starts or comes off the bench, so I want to highlight that remarkable milestone. She is a role model and an inspiration for both current and future generations, and I am sure there is plenty more to come from Alexia. Hopefully, we can celebrate her 150 appearances for Spain with a victory.”
