Sonia Bermúdez: “We must highlight our defensive work. We knew how to suffer.”
With the first 90 minutes of the final completed and the opening match in Kaiserslautern ending without changes on the scoreboard, Sonia Bermúdez answered questions from the media and analysed several aspects of the game. Speaking, for example, about her halftime talk, she said: “In the first half, Germany were superior; we struggled to adjust our pressing. In the second half we improved, but I want to highlight the team’s defensive work—we know how to defend and how to suffer. Now we focus on the return leg; the Metropolitano will decide.”
Regarding Edna’s debut, Sonia commented: “It was a source of pride to see Edna make her debut. We wanted her to stretch the play and try to finish first-time; she had one chance, she slipped, but it was a happy day for her.”
As the coach had warned beforehand, the opponents did not lower their intensity and made things extremely difficult: “Football is very tough; they are a great side. Our players are prepared to do their job—we all know what an exceptional goalkeeper Cata is. We head into the second leg at 0–0, with everything open. Ona and Olga were at an outstanding level. What matters is that the match ended in a draw, we will be at home with our fans, and the team is mentally focused on recovering as soon as possible and trying to win.”
Looking ahead to the second match of the final, which will be played in Madrid on Tuesday, they have taken note of what needs refining: “We struggled in the first half; we made adjustments in the second, and we’ll need to make more ahead of the Metropolitano. We must create more chances and cause more damage, but I want to emphasise the team’s defensive level today.”
Sonia concluded by underlining that this is “one of the best matches you can watch,” given the quality of the players involved.
