A golden generation with Switzerland in its heart

Six of the current senior squad won the U19 European Championship in Switzerland five years ago

The Spanish national team plays away in its fourth UEFA Women's Nations League match tomorrow to Switzerland at the Letzigrund Arena. It was not in this exact stadium which was the scene of Spanish celebrations six years ago, but it was in this country that a golden generation reached its heights at the European Championships five years ago.

That excellent U-19 team beat Germany in a final that contained six players that are now members of the senior national team setup. They are Oihane Hernández, Athenea del Castillo, Teresa Abelleira, Anna Torrodá, Laia Codina and Olga Carmona.

These six players took part in the final where Spain beat Germany, with the winning goal scored by María Llompart. Oihane and Laia remember that final as one of the most amazing moments of their glittering careers, a match where they were already able to see the progress of a national team that would eventually lead to them becoming world champions.

However, they are not the only players who achieved great success in Switzerland with Spain's youth teams, with players of the stature of Ivana Andrés and Alexia Putellas achieving the same feat in 2010 and 2011 with the U-17 national team.
