Aitana Bonmatí wins the Balon d’or!
Spanish football’s success is not a matter of chance. Aitana Bonmatí has become the best player in the world after winning the Balon d’or. The player from Villanueva y Geltrú has had a spectacular season, winning the First Division championship and the Champions League with FC Barcelona, finishing with the most important trophy of her career to date: the World Cup.
Her pivotal role in the Spanish national team has been decisive in her being awarded the most prestigious individual prize on the planet. Her technical quality and her numbers speak for themselves.
In this way, Aitana picks up the baton from Alexia Putellas, winner of the trophy in the two previous editions, demonstrating the magnificent growth of Spanish women's football. The midfielder is now part of history, becoming only the fourth player to achieve this distinction since the women's award was introduced.
But Aitana was not the only Spanish player nominated for the Ballon d'Or. Salma Paralluelo (FC Barcelona) came third, Olga Carmona (Real Madrid) sixth, Patri Guiijarro (FC Barcelona) eighth, Mapi León (FC Barcelona) sixteenth and Alba Redondo (Levante UD) twenty-first. Yet more proof that Spanish football is at the top of the game.
