Athenea celebrates her first birthday as world champion

Not only that, this week, Athenea del Castillo has double reason to celebrate. Today was her 23rd birthday, although not the first one she has celebrated while playing for the Spanish National Team, having even previously spent one of her special days at the Ciudad del Fútbol while progressing through the youth ranks. However, it was the first time she celebrated it as a world champion. Among her wishes and on her mind is, of course, qualification for the Olympic Games.

But in addition to her birthday, yesterday, 23 October, was the anniversary of her debut with the national team. In 2020, she took the field at La Cartuja to replace Mariona in the final minutes of a European Championship qualifier against the Czech Republic in which Spain won 4-0.

During dinner, the player blew out the candles on the cake while her team-mates sang happy birthday to her. This international break is certainly one that she will have fond memories to long cherish.
