Dutchman Serdar Gözübüyük officiate Serbia-Spain in Belgrade
Spain's opener in the latest edition of the UEFA Nations League, scheduled for Thursday in Belgrade, has had a referee appointed for it in the shape of Dutchman Serdar Gözübüyük, who will be 39 years old next October.
Born in the Dutch town of Haarlem, Gözübüyük is a referee of whom Luis de la Fuente has fond memories, as he was in charge of refereeing the final of the European Under-21 Championships five years ago, with the national team winning by two goals to one against Germany with goals from the now senior internationals Dani Olmo and Fabián Ruiz.
Subsequently, the Dutch referee has officiated two Senior Team matches: against Switzerland in Geneva (0-1 with a goal from Pablo Sarabia) on 9 June 2022 in the last edition of the Nations League and against Scotland at La Cartuja (2-0, goals from Morata and Oihan Sancet) in a decisive qualifier for Euro 2024.
The national team begins the defence of its crown this Thursday against Serbia in Belgrade at 20:45 in Spanish peninsular time.
On Thursday 5 September at the Rajko Mitić Stadium in Belgrade, Serdar Gözübüyük will be assisted on the sidelines by his compatriots Erwin Zeinstra and Johan Balder, with fellow Dutchman Sander van der Eijk acting as the fourth official.
The VAR room will also be manned by Dutch referees Pol van Boekel as VAR and Jeroen Manschot will assist the video assistant referee.
