A referee who has made history for a historic elimination match. Spain will play its first quarterfinal match in a World Cup this Friday at 13:00 local time (3:00 AM in Spain) with Frenchwoman Stéphanie Frappart as the main referee of the match.

Born 39 years ago in the French town of Plessis-Bouchard, Stéphanie Frappart has been a pioneer in refereeing: the first to officiate a match in the men's World Cup, the Champions League, or, in 2019, the UEFA Super Cup final.

Stéphanie Frappart has been an international referee since 2011 and the first woman to officiate in major men's world tournaments.

Frappart has also recently officiated the Women's World Cup match in the round of 16 between Sweden and the United States, which ended with a narrow penalty shootout victory for the Nordic team.

For the quarterfinal match between Spain and the Netherlands, the French referee will be joined by her compatriots Manuela Nicolosi and Elodie Coppola as assistant referees, along with Italian Maria Sola Ferrieri as the fourth official.
