Pablo Páez Gavira ‘Gavi’ was back to his best in the semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup played on Wednesday at the Al Jawhara Stadium in Jeddah.

FC Barcelona will contest another Super Cup final, the 27th in their history and the third in a row. In the semi-finals, the Catalans beat Athletic Club 2-0, largely thanks to a superb individual performance by Gavi. The Spain international scored the first goal after arriving late and sending Alejandro Balde's cross into the back of the net. The Barcelona youth international wanted to dedicate the goal to his teammate Dani Olmo, who was in the stands yesterday.

The Andalusian also played a key role in the second goal, slotting a perfect ball through for Lamine Yamal to beat the Bilbao goalkeeper. At 20 years of age, the midfielder from Los Palacios y Villafranca (Seville) is heading into his third edition of the Super Cup, after 2022 and 2023 (he missed 2024 due to injury).

Gavi was instrumental in Barça's last Super Cup title. On 15 January 2023, the young star put in a perfect performance in the final against Real Madrid at the King Fahd Sports City in Riyadh. He scored the first goal and provided the assists for the other two, to Lewandowski and Pedri, to make the final score 1-3. That Super Cup was the first title Gavi won in his career: ‘I have very good memories of the last Super Cup I played in and hopefully we can repeat it.
