Gayà leaves the Spanish national team’s stage for the World Cup

The left-back leaves Qatar with the affection, respect and recognition of his teammates and the whole RFEF.

José Luis Gayà will not stay with the Spanish national team at the World Cup in Qatar. Luis Enrique has taken the decision to replace the Valencia winger after analysing the situation carefully, and always in consultation with the medical services of the Spanish Football Federation. He was injured during the afternoon training session in Amman on Wednesday.

The RFEF would like to send a warm message to Gayà, who deserved to defend the Spanish national team at the World Cup in Qatar after four years of playing for the national team at the highest level.

As Luis Enrique explained after the victory in Jordan, Gayà's injury has been the worst news since the stage began. The technical staff understands that they need all 26 players at full strength to face the challenge of the World Cup, which is exciting but also demanding.

Gayà suffers from a low-grade lateral sprain in his right ankle, as confirmed by the MRI scan he underwent. He will return to Spain in the next few hours.
