Irene del Río’s role as Spain’s assistant coach
She has already been working in Montse Tomé's staff for several training camps, which she said is "a privilege" because she is "with the best in the world".
Irene del Río is the technical assistant coach for the Spanish national team, a figure who supports both the coaches and the physical trainers, facilitating both the roles and at the same time improving the performance of the squad: "I provide support in analysing the games, designing training routines, monitoring the training camps and also in physical preparation".
The idea is "to be able to provide a better and higher quality training to the players," she says, explaining the purpose of her role in the staff. Women's football, and more specifically the national team, has not stopped growing in recent years. Irene tells us that they now have more resources than when she was playing, thanks in large part to the commitment of the RFEF: "The change has been exponential. You can see it in what is being invested in the Federation and in the clubs".
Finally, she acknowledges that the national coach, Montse Tomé, was vital in her joining the team, because they share the same values: "Montse is totally convinced that she can lead this team and that is what gave me the confidence to join, because everything she does is with the aim of helping the team to get better and to win".
