The Spanish national team had a very special visit on their second day of training at the Ciudad del Fútbol in Las Rozas. Juan Carlos Unzué shared a chat with all the internationals and with Luis de la Fuente's coaching staff, who asked him to visit the squad and share with them his experiences, both on and off the pitch.

Unzué, diagnosed with ALS in 2020, has never shied away from stepping forward over the years to raise awareness of the struggle of ALS sufferers and explain a disease that is still unknown to so many. Words such as acceptance, ambition or having a clear conscience with oneself were an important part of a speech that the internationals listened to with great attention before bursting into a heartfelt applause.

He was then invited to the afternoon training session held by the national team on the main pitch of the Ciudad del Fútbol, where Luis de la Fuente, the players and Juan Carlos Unzué himself posed with the Together against ALS T-shirt, a project that the former Spain goalkeeper in the 1985 Youth World Cup final, the first ever played to feature for all age categories of the team, is leading.

‘I hope you are aware that you are privileged,’ Unzué told the players, asking them to trust their team-mates during the European Championships that is about to begin. ‘You have to be ambitious and at the same time the best team-mates you can be. The most important thing is that you look in the mirror with a clear conscience,’ he concluded to a round of applause from the internationals at Ciudad del Fútbol.
