The RFEF takes the lead in the fight against stroke
The Ciudad del Fútbol will become a “Brain-Protected Space” thanks to an agreement signed this Thursday with the Fundación Freno al Ictus.
Next Tuesday, 29 October, marks World Stroke Day, a date dedicated to raising awareness about a condition that affects around 120,000 people every year in Spain, causing approximately 25,000 deaths. Beyond its human cost, stroke has a profound impact on patients and their families and is responsible for 90% of acquired disabilities in adults in Spain.
Raising public awareness about this serious health condition, promoting prevention, and establishing rapid-response protocols in case of a stroke have become essential objectives — and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF)has joined this important cause through the signing of a collaboration agreement with the Fundación Freno al Ictus.
The agreement aims to support scientific research on stroke and acquired brain injury, expand public knowledge of the condition, and promote social and professional inclusion for those affected. The RFEF Secretary General, Álvaro de Miguel, described the initiative as “a partnership that unites efforts for the benefit of everyone. The Federation is now a better, safer, and healthier place thanks to this agreement, which strengthens our capacity for prevention and understanding of a disease that has touched so many lives.”
For his part, Julio Agredano, President of Fundación Freno al Ictus, emphasised that “this campaign will allow us to reach a massive audience through sport, which is key to increasing awareness about stroke. We thank the RFEF for its support in this fight and are convinced that together we will make a strong social impact.”
In addition to signing the collaboration agreement with the RFEF, Agredano also conducted an initial training sessionthis Thursday for staff members at the Ciudad del Fútbol, whose facilities are expected to be certified as a Brain-Protected Space in the coming months, once all necessary procedures are completed.
This partnership represents a significant and life-saving alliance. According to scientific studies, it is estimated that nine out of ten strokes can be prevented through healthy lifestyle habits and early detection of the condition.
