Lamine Yamal scoops Laureus Award 'Breakthrough Sportsperson of the Year' Laureus Award

The 2025 Laureus Awards have granted an individual honour to Lamine Yamal, who has been named 'Breakthrough Sportsperson of the Year'. The Spanish FC Barcelona player, just 17 years old, already knows what it means to win a European Championships—where he was the top assist provider, the best young player, and selected as part of the competition’s Team of the Tournament.
His performances for both club and country have been outstanding, which earned him this prestigious award ahead of other strong contenders. It was no easy feat though, as his rivals included Victor Wembanyama (basketball), Letsile Tebogo (athletics), Summer McIntosh (swimming), Julien Alfred (athletics), and Bayer Leverkusen 04 (football).
He is without doubt one of the most promising players on the planet, and despite his youth, he has crowds on their feet and jaws dropping in stadiums at his dazzling dribbles, unbelievable assists, and unforgettable goals. Lamine Yamal now adds this award to his Golden Boy title as the best young player, but many more collective trophies are no doubt on the horizon.
With the Spanish national team, he is currently in the semi-finals of the UEFA Nations League, with the final scheduled for 8 June. As an FC Barcelona player, he has already won the Spanish Super Cup, and his club remains in contention for the League title, the Copa del Rey Mapfre, and the Champions League.
