Just as his nomination for this year's World Coach of the Year award became public, Luis de la Fuente appeared in the press room at the Rajko Mitić stadium on the eve of Spain's debut in another edition of the UEFA Nations League.

It will be the first match in Spain’s defence of their crown in the competition and after a perfect European Championships and "a tremendously exciting summer" in the words of the national coach himself.

"Seeing our people happy made me emotional, as well as the welcome I received in my hometown", acknowledged the coach from Haro, who now "wants to keep winning and achieving significant things. This team is insatiable and we believe that the best is yet to come".

Serbia are now first up in their quest to become double continental champions in a match that De la Fuente expects to be "very tough and very tight because Serbia are a great team with world class players".

Successes, titles and the unanimous recognition of the fans will not be a burden in the opinion of the national coach, excited as ever about another challenge that they go into "with extraordinary motivation because we want to keep improving and growing to continue being the best", something that now they have to demonstrate this Thursday on the pitch in Belgrade.
