Luis de la Fuente: "This is a new stage and we want the fans to be close to us".

The national coach assesses his first call-up list of the year and is focused on the match against Norway: "We are thinking about the future and everyone has an open door".

Minutes after announcing the squad for the qualifiers against Norway and Scotland, the national coach appeared in the José Villalonga room at the Ciudad del Fútbol to offer a message of harmony and gratitude before answering questions from journalists.

"I would like to welcome you to our home. I've been the national coach for three months and I would like to take this time to thank the great work of my coaching staff, which has made everything easier for me. I will always be at your disposal," said Luis de la Fuente, He also confirmed that the team's first training session this coming Monday at 7:00 p.m. will be open to the public.

For the coach from La Rioja, "this is a new stage in which we want to have the fans close to us and for them to wear the national team's jersey, as I’ve said since the first day".

De la Fuente assessed the call-up of 26 players, stressing that "making a list is a very costly process in which many different aspects have to be evaluated and we have to look for a balance", so "the system is not so important, but rather sticking to an idea and a philosophy of play".

"It's always hard for me to leave people out of the squad, but it's up to me to make the decision".

The versatility of the called-up players is one of the most highlighted virtues by the coach, who will have "some fantastic players because fortunately there is a lot of competition in our country. Only the strikers alone ensure more than forty goals every season".

Regarding the inclusion of some players over others, Luis de la Fuente explained that "it is always very difficult for me to leave people out of the call-up list, but it is up to me to make the decision. We focus on living in the present and thinking about the future. All players, who want to play in the national team and can be called up, have the doors open to them".

Regarding the work to prepare for this month's qualifying matches, the coach points out that "the main drawback that a coach has is the lack of time. We are used to handling this pressure and we are confident that before the match against Norway they will have assimilated the game ideas we want to develop on the field".

The coach describes the Nordic team as "a great team" and is confident about being able to count on the massive support of the fans for the match on March 25 at La Rosaleda, for which he is "calm and confident" thanks to the list of players he has for these first two qualifiers for the 2024 European Championship.
