Almost fifty days after lifting the European Championships trophy in Berlin, Luis de la Fuente has announced his latest Spain squad and appeared at a press conference this Friday ahead of Spain's opening match in the UEFA Nations League, a tournament of which they are reigning champions.

"The best news for the Spanish national team is that it is very difficult to make the squad", the coach from La Rioja summed up the splendid moment the national team is in after showing his support for the athletes representing our country at the Paralympic Games in Paris, as well as the thanks of the whole world of football to Jesús Navas, who this week announced that he is hanging up his international boots.

Regarding the squad for the matches against Serbia in Belgrade on Thursday 5 September and Switzerland on Sunday 8 September in Geneva, the coach said: "All the decisions we have made are for sporting reasons. Final a squads are always difficult to make and require a lot of analysis. We are keeping the same core squad as at the European Championships and we are adding other players who will provide us with some alternatives.”

As reigning European Championships and Nations League champions, Spain now faces new challenges with a squad in which Luis de la Fuente is confident, because "these players are always hungry and we continue in the same way. There is always room for improvement. There is a great present and a better future. I'm convinced that we want to keep fighting and go as far as possible".

Referring to his own future, the coach from La Rioja said that "it's about being happy and content and I'm happy doing my job at the Royal Spanish Football Federation. You never know what the future holds. I focus on the here and now of my work and I don't think about other things".

"We have the team in our minds," said Luis de la Fuente, who also took time to comment on figures such as captain Álvaro Morata, absent due to injury for the training camp that will begin on Monday at the Ciudad del Fútbol, and once again backed his players, "because they are the best," concluded the national team coach.
