Luis Rubiales presents Zubimendi and Joselu with the insignia for their debut with the National Team
Luis Rubiales, during the pre-match to the face off between Scotland and Spain at Hampden Park, has delivered, as is tradition, the commemorative badges to the last internationals to debut with the National Team. In this case, the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation awarded the distinction to Martín Zubimendi and Joselu Mato.
Zubimendi made his debut with the national team in June 2021, a friendly in Leganés against Lithuania that was to serve as preparation for that summer's European Championship. However, Sergio Busquets tested positive for coronavirus during the preparation for the tournament and, as a precaution and as the national team was confined, it was decided that the U-21 players, who were also called up at that time, would play in that match. Among them was Zubimendi, who played in the 4-0 win over Lithuania. The match, due to the aforementioned circumstances, was also Luis de la Fuente's first.
Joselu Mato's debut is more recent, starring in last Saturday's 3-0 win over Norway at La Rosaleda. The striker, who turned 33 on Monday, took the field in the final stretch and scored two goals very quickly. It’s impossible to have a better baptism.
At the event, held before the pre-match lunch before the match against Scotland, Rubiales recognized the merit of these two players, the last to put on the national team jersey. Zubimendi and Joselu's teammates reciprocated with a warm applause.
