Mallorca can dream of another Cup two decades after their last Cup success

RCD Mallorca and Real Sociedad meet in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey 2023/2024

The paths of Mallorca and Javier Aguirre cross once again in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey. In a meeting that we enjoyed in 2003, in what was an unforgettable event for the Balearic fans, as that year the team now coached by the Mexican coach won the trophy after beating Recreativo de Huelva 3-0 in the final. In the same year, Aguirre made it all the way to the semi-finals with Osasuna. The manager and the team have now joined forces to try to return to a Cup final which, in the case of Mallorca, would be their fourth and in the case of Javier Aguirre, his third.

Mallorca have amazed the footballing world on their route to the semi-finals. They have overcome Club Deportivo Boiro (0-4) in the first round, Club Deportivo Valle de Egüés (0-3) in the second round, Burgos CF (0-3) in the third round, Tenerife (0-1) in the last sixteen in extra time and the brilliant Girona (3-2) in an unforgettable encounter in the quarter-finals. They faced a tough battle against Tenerife in the Last 16 in a tie that was decided by a single goal scored extra time. Furthermore, when they got the better of a brilliant Girona (3-2) in an unforgettable quarter-final in which the locals held on after being 3-0 up against the second-placed team in the First Division. They were able to hold on to advance to the semi-finals, the fifth in the club's history.

Their undefeated path has been build on the back of a solid defence, creating lots of chances and a good work ethic. Mallorca's record in this Copa del Rey can hardly be bettered, having scored 14 goals and conceding just two goals in the five matches prior to facing Real Sociedad, the opponent with whom they will battle for a place in the Cup final.
