MATCH REPORT | Penalties see Mallorca through to their fourth Cup Final

After a thrilling semi-final, RCD Mallorca's precision from the penalty spot sees them flying into the Copa del Rey final twenty-one years after their last appearance in the Cup’s showpiece match.

In a packed Estadio de Anoeta with a spectacular atmosphere, RCD Mallorca tasted the magic of semi-final victory in the cup with a result that gives them another date with history 21 years since they last managed to reach the final stage of the Copa del Rey.

The 0-0 draw from the first leg at Son Moix left all results still possible and there was an electric start to a match in which both teams tried to seize the initiative by striking first. Javier Aguirre's team played with great intensity, making things uncomfortable for La Real with their pressing and imposing themselves in the individual duels.

After the fast and frenetic start to the match, both the Basque side and the team from the Balearic Islands sought to minimise risks and take advantage of their opponents’ mistakes to create dangerous chances rather than opening up play themselves. Abdón Prats had the first clear chance of the match with a shot that was deflected wide.

In the final moments of the first half, Greif was the protagonist when he saved a Brais Méndez penalty in a guilt-edged missed opportunity for Real Sociedad. With no goals, no clear team dominating and all results still possible, the game went to half-time.

After the restart, Gio González scored a goal for the visitors when he ran in at the back post to meet a Jaume Costa cross and drill his header back across the goalkeeper to put RCD Mallorca ahead on the scoreboard with a finely worked team goal.

Mallorca's goal changed the script of the match. Imanol Alguacil's team, spurred on by their fans, looked for a reaction that did not take long to arrive. A pass from Brais Méndez was masterfully finished from just inside the box with the right foot of the recently introduced Mikel Oyarzabal. The Txuri-urdin captain put the tie back on level terms with less than twenty minutes to go.

Real went on the attack and managed to box Mallorca in for the final part of the normal time, but alas for the players tired legs, they could not stop the match going to extra time.

A quick-fire snapshot double chance for the home side came in extra time, but Samu Costa heroically blocked both attempts off the line before Mallorca had a chance with Sergi Darder, whose strike was deflected wide by Remiro. As such, neither team looked able to prevent the penalty shootout that was looming on the horizon.

After two hundred and ten minutes of football the two teams were inseparable on the scoreboard and the tie was to be decided from the penalty spot. Greif saved Oyarzabal's first spot-kick and Sergi Darder converted the decisive penalty to spark mad scenes of jubilant celebration among Javier Aguirre's players and travelling fans at the Estadio Anoeta.

Athletic Club or Atlético de Madrid will be the Mallorca opponents on 6 April at La Cartuja, where they will fight for their second Copa del Rey title.
