MATCH REPORT | Seventh heaven for Spain EURO (0-7)

Goals from Salma Paralluelo (3), Jenni Hermoso, Esther González (2) and Sheila García gave Spain a comfortable away win against Belgium.

The Spanish national team put in an extremely convincing performance in their opening game of the 2025 European Championships qualifying campaign. With their victory, Spain are now top of Group A2 ahead of Denmark, Czech Republic and Belgium.

After a first few minutes, in which the home team had limited success with a couple of runs down the right flank that forced the Spanish defence to be alert and at the races, the first goal came for the national team. From a corner kick taken by Teresa Abelleira, captain Irene Paredes sent the ball against the post with a powerful header and Salma Paralluelo pronounced to beat the Belgian goalkeeper and put the ball into the back of the net in the eighth minute.

Spain then had a double chance to increase their lead, but this time the goal eluded them. A few minutes later, however, Jenni Hermoso scored Spain's second from Athenea's assist. Jenni's goal would not be the last of the first half as, between the Madrid-born player, Alexia and Zaragoza-born player, Salma, a beautifully crafted move would end with Salma scoring her second goal of the game. With the score at 0-3, the match reached half time.

More than 1,000 Spanish fans cheered on the national team from the stands of Den Dreef stadium.

The second half could not have started any better for Spain, when Ona Batlle's run down the left wing ended up with her putting the ball into the heart of the area for Salma to score her hat-trick and Spain’s fourth.

In the 64th minute, barely a minute after coming onto the pitch, Esther González scored the fifth for Spain, taking advantage of another good ball from Athenea del Castillo. There was still time for more, though. With just a few minutes left on the clock, in the 86th minute, Shei García took advantage of a rebound off a Belgian defender to score the sixth and, in the 90th minute, Esther would score the seventh and final goal, sending the ball into the net from close range after another pass from Athenea, her third assist of the match.

An extremely complete performance from the Spanish national team, who sit on top of their qualifying group for the European Championships in Switzerland. In the other group match, Denmark won 1-3 against the Czech Republic, Spain's next opponents on Tuesday in Burgos.
