MATCH REPORT | Spain's Epic Victory Secures Historic Medal Bid at Paris 2024
Great victories sometimes require immense effort, sacrifice, magic, and a touch of the epic. Those are the triumphs that are most memorable, the ones that leave the sweetest taste. In 25 years' time, everyone will remember where they were during the Spain-Colombia match at the Paris 2024 Games, because the game had it all. Goals, tension, scares, fear, twists and turns, suffering, and glory. Plenty of glory in the end.
The match got tough for Spain right from the start due to an early counterattacking goal by Colombia. Spain gradually settled into the game, but the South Americans struck quickly every time they won the ball back, creating a daunting scenario for the Spaniards.
Ideas were lacking at times, but never the attitude or desire. And faith can move mountains, as they say. But if the match was complicated, it was suddenly going to become an Everest-like challenge. Minutes into the second half, after Spain had started brightly, came the second Colombian goal, another lightning-fast move starting from the back.
From then on, the only thing left to do was dream, play, and seek a miracle. And the miracle came in the form of late goals in the final ten minutes. First, Jenni Hermoso finished off some great work down the flank by Ona Battle, and then, with time running out, captain Irene Paredes scored one of the most important goals in the history of this national team.
The extra time was not easy against a fully-defensive Colombian team, and the game went to penalties, where Cata Coll, who had already been the hero in regulation by saving a one-on-one chance, came up trumps again for Spain.
After Mariona, Eva Navarro, and Salma Paralluelo scored, Aitana's goal brought delirium to the team and all the Spanish fans. Drama and epic, victory and the semi-finals. The Olympic medal is now just one step away. France or Brazil, the next objective for our team.
