A colossal Spain overturn France and fly high into the European Championships final

Perhaps the most famous line from La Marseillaise could be used as a title for this match report, but one is powerless to describe Spain's epic display of solidarity, resilience and dazzling flashes of talent as they beat the all-conquering France on Tuesday.

The ever-resistant reigning World Cup runners-up buckled in Munich against a Spain stubborn in their determination to make history in every game at this European Championships.

Luis de la Fuente was forced into reshuffling the starting eleven by the unfortunate absence of various players, bringing in Nacho, Dani Olmo and  Jesus Navas, who had to deal with Mbappé's forays.

After Fabián's early header after five minutes, the golden Parisian responded as he knows best soon after, with a powerful run down the left flank and a pinpoint cross to the head of a Kolo Muani who made no mistake when heading home.

France took an early lead and the tie was set up perfectly, with the physical power of their midfielders preventing Spain from building connections in the opposition’s half.

Lamine Yamal, voted player of the match, turned the semi-final on its head with a goal that was legendary from the moment he conceived it.

The national team was suffering, but a teenager who will turn seventeen next Saturday came to their aid with a goal that has instantly gone down in the history books.

Lamine Yamal received the ball just beyond the halfway line, made space by getting away from Rabiot, 25 metres from goal now, he struck a deadly left-footed shot at 102 kilometres per hour that even Maignan's right-hand post could not keep out of the net.

It was an unforgettable moment that left Les Bleus stunned by a Spain side that smelled blood and kept pushing until it oused out of the French defence. Shortly after, Dani Olmo tightly manoeuvred to make an opening for a deadly right-footed shot that Koundé could do nothing more about than hammer into his own net.

It was the second goal and the second comeback of this European Championships for a roaring Spain capable of turning things around at every stage of a match.

What would come after the restart invited Spain to defend with the ball and the national team had close to 60% in possession, to the despair of Tchouameni, Mbappé and Dembélé, who came up against an unbeatable Unai with a chance on the hour mark.

Deschamps would move to the bench, with Giroud and Griezmann creating good opportunities for the wasteful boots of Mbappé and Theo Hernández, destiny had been painted red and yellow.

Spain have reached their fifth European Championships final and on 14 July, against England or the Netherlands, they will be aiming to win an unprecedented fourth European trophy: Marchons (march on), goes the French anthem, with which Luis de la Fuente will surely agree.
