Spain dominate and Jenni Hermoso scores (0-1)

Spain outclassed Italy and remain unbeaten in the Nations League thanks to a goal from their all-time leading scorer in the closing stages of the match.

The Spanish National Team continue to show their high quality performance levels in the UEFA Women's Nations League. The national team, unbeaten in Group A4, beat Italy on their visit to Salerno thanks to near total domination of possession in what was an attacking display (1-0). The winning goal was slow to come, but Jenni Hermoso showed why she is the top scorer in the history of the game and did not miss her chance to score the victorious goal.

From the opening whistle Spain showed their opponents that they had clear ideas on how they wanted the game to pan out. It took less than five minutes for Montse Tomé’s team to generate their first chance. A spectacular move by Aitana Bonmatí saw her dribble past various opponents to get inside the area and nearly finish brilliantly only for Giuliani to pull off a great reflex save when it looked like she was beaten.

From then on, the first half became one-way traffic. Spain were showing great ball retention and had a host of big chances, with two of the clearest of those opportunities coming from Esther's boots. Despite this, Italy also put Cata Coll to the test with some isolated counter-attacks, with the Balearic goalkeeper at one point flying through the air to make a fingertip save from a shot from Linari inside the area.

After half time, the match’s script did not change. Spain managed to break down an Italy side that had less and less of the ball, but the ball still refused to go in. It was an exercise in patience for a team used to scoring goals freely, but in Salerno they also showed that they also know how to suffer and fight until the very end.

Once again, patience and perseverance were the key to success. With the clock dangerously close to the 90th minute, Salma played a ball from the left to Alexia Putellas, which Giuliani stopped with a great save. On the rebound, Spain's all-time leading scorer did not disappoint, Jenni Hermoso, latching on to the ball saved by the Italian goalkeeper and firing home to give Spain a well-deserved win. Unbeaten in the group (three out of three), nine points in the bag and already thinking about the match against Switzerland.
