MATCH REPORT | Spain thrive in the Geneva rain (1-4)
Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, but about learning to dance in the rain, and the truth is that this Sunday night's downpour in Geneva was a constant factor in proceedings and Spain found a way to dance their way to victory.
Neither the puddles, nor the poor state of the pitch, nor the spectacular home form of the Swiss, nor the early dismissal of Robin Le Normand prevented Spain from once again finding their rhythm and performing their memorable dance out on the pitch.
The coach made three changes from the side that drew in Belgrade three days ago, with the return of captain Rodrigo Hernández a positive addition to the starting lineup at the Stade de Genève.
In contrast to the Balkan team, Switzerland decided to go on the attack early, showing a remarkable ability to penetrate down the left flank, but Spain countered in turn with Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal looking incisive on the Spanish flanks.
After three minutes, a run by the Catalan youngster ended with a measured ball to the head of Joselu, who once again found the back of the net on his return to the starting line-up.
The Swiss were not to be deterred, however, and they responded soon after with a goal that was disallowed for a Freuler handball in the build up at the behest of the VAR. Spain then sliced through with another run, this time by Nico Williams, which ended in his rebounded shot off Kobel that Fabián Ruiz made no mistake in slotting home.
Spain will be looking to move into top spot in their group on 12 October against Denmark in Murcia.
With the momentum building, there was still one more twist in the downpour to come in the form of Le Normand's red card for bringing the striker down as last man, the direct consequence of which was Pedri's sacrifice to bring on Dani Vivian.
Murat Yakin's men were on a rampage towards David Raya's goal, taking advantage of all their attacking resources, including set-pieces, which troubled the Spanish national team everytime they could.
After several attempts, Amdouni found the net shortly before the break from a corner and after the restart another corner brought what looked like an equaliser. However, it was ruled out for the ball curling out of bounds off the corner kick.
The national team suffered with an ever-energetic Raya between the sticks and Luis de la Fuente moving the bench to reinforce a team that was being outnumbered, but who knew how to avoid dropping too deep and gradually played their way back into the game with the final thrust.
This came in the final third with an outstanding Ferran Torres on the right: first to set up Fabián Ruiz's goal and shortly afterwards to finish off a counter-attack launched by Joselu.
In 32 home games, Switzerland have lost just twice and this second defeat was once again at the hand of an imperial Spain side who, with their first UEFA Nations League win of the season, continue to show Europe that the party and the dancing continue.
