MATCH REPORT | Spain through to the quarters after taking second place in the group (1-2)
Santi Denia introduced changes to the starting eleven with respect to the first two matches. Only Aimar Oroz remained in the starting lineup from the matches against Uzbekistan and the Dominican Republic.
The Spanish started the game on top against an opponent who showed in the first few minutes that they wanted to take advantage of any loose ball to push on and threaten Iturbe’s goal.
The first clear chance came in the seventh minute of the match, when Jon Pacheco almost scored from an Adrián Bernabé corner kick. In the 18th minute, a quick transition started by Samu and Diego López ended with Marc Pubill's shot hitting the post. The response came soon after with a long-range effort from Egypt's Ahmed Koka that Iturbe turned away.
On the stroke of half-time, Egypt took the lead through Ibrahim Adel's right-footed shot from outside the box after good work by Zizo.
In the second half, Spain continued to dominate possession and increasingly pinned Egypt back into their area. Camello, Samu and Sergio Gomez all had chances to equalise after the restart, but the Egyptians struck again after taking advantage of a mistake by the Spanish defence to score a second, once again through Adel.
Then, Iturbe made a double save, preventing the score from getting worse and Camello almost reduced the deficit after heading Sergio Gomez's cross from the left against the post. Chances came and went for Spain, but there it was not their day in front of goal.
The Spanish did eventually score and the goal came in the 90th minute, Samu heading in Camello's right-wing cross. With ten minutes of extra time remaining, the Spanish team pushed on relentlessly looking for an equaliser, but it was not to be.
With this result, the Men’s Olympic football team finishes the group stage as runners-up in Group C and will play the quarter-finals this Friday, 2 August, at 17:00 in Lyon.
