MATCH REPORT | Spain to fight for Gold! (1-2)
Spain will compete for gold in Paris. It wasn't an easy route to the final, as Morocco fought until the very end. However, Spanish faith in their game and, above all, perseverance led to the comeback that sealed their place in the Olympic final.
The match started with the Moroccans one the front foot, but a stoppage due to the referee picking up an injury favoured the Spaniards. Fermín went close to scoring the first goal with a great shot, but the ball was touched wide for a corner. Once again, the European champions nearly put the team led by Santi Denia ahead.
The path to glory is never easy; there are always hurdles along the way, and this time was no different. A penalty to Morocco after a piece of misfortune from Pablo Barrios, resulted in Spain going behind. Just before half-time, Álex Baena had the chance to equalise at his feet, but his shot went just wide of the post.
Spain drew on faith and hard work to come back in the match. The second half was packed full of chances for Spain, such as Pablo Barrios' shot from outside the box. It was persistence that turned Spain’s dominance into a goal, and who better than Fermín to open the scoring for Santi Denia's side. A perfect recovery with a magician's finish brought the equaliser in this semi-final.
The water break in the second half didn't stop the Spanish attacks. And as the saying goes, where there's a will, there's a way. And so it was, Fermín passed to Juanlu who scored just inside the post, lifting all of Spain from their seats. The final stretch wasn't easy, Spain fought and defended tooth and nail to ensure the scoreline didn't change again.
The final whistle signalled euphoria for the Spaniards who secured their place in the Olympic final and will compete for gold. This Friday, 9th August, all of Spain has a date with destiny starting at 6:00 PM with the Spanish team that will strive to win another medal for their country.
