MATCH REPORT I Victory propels Spain to the Olympic Games (2-0)
This match had a touch of being a homage to Spanish footballing legends as before the match kicked off, Alexia Putellas, Irene Paredes and Jenni Hermoso were honoured for reaching 100 caps. Three legends of the national team received a standing ovation from the entire Riazor stadium.
The first few minutes of the match were very intense and Spain were on the front foot looking the stronger. The national team took to the Riazor pitch and established control of the ball and went looking for the goal that would get the Spanish fans out of their seats. After several chances, the goal came. Olga Carmona's cross into the heart of the box was headed into the back of the net by Aitana Bonmatí.
With this slim advantage on the scoreboard, the Spaniards went back to the dressing room after dominating the first half. At the start of the second half, Alexia Putellas laid off a perfect ball to Lucía García whose shot crashed against the crossbar. The game continued in the same pattern, with Spain dominating but unable to find the second goal to put the game to bed.
In the final stretch, Montse Tomé's team continued to look for the second goal in Riazor. The goal eventually came and proved to be worth the wait. Tere Abelleira, from near the halfway line, saw the goalkeeper off her line and banged a dipping effort in from long range to double Spain’s lead. Jenni Hermoso could have further extended the lead, but the crossbar thwarted her efforts to do so.
With this victory, the Spanish National Team finishes off their Women's Euro 2025 qualification campaign, for which they were already qualified, and can now concentrate on Paris where they will play at the Olympic Games for the first time in history.
